Jessica watched as the two men seemed to have a temporary standoff. Jake must have relented, but she couldn’t tell if he was sobbing or shaking with anger as he fell into the seat and Mark shut the door. She stared through the warped glass of the living room window at the taillights pulling out of the driveway, their damp red glow illuminating what looked like a few books starting to get soaked on the top porch stair.

The ride back to his parents’ house was silent. Mark let Jake be, figuring he’d talk when he wanted to talk. And if he didn’t want to talk, that was fine.

Mark put a finger to his lips as they took their shoes off on the porch and stepped inside. He showed Jake the guest room, which had its own bathroom, and softly encouraged him to try the breathing exercise he’d shown him.

“Just a four count in, hold for four, and a four count out. Tell you what, why don’t you take a shower, and leave your clothes here in the hallway. I’ll wash them, and—”

“I don’t need you washing my clothes.”

“Shh. Not so loud. I’m doing a load anyway.”

Which he hadn’t really planned on doing, but he wouldn’t mind being up for a while and letting his wheels turn on this medical mystery of small-town sickness.

Mark listened for the guest room door to close before he went downstairs and sank into his father’s easy chair in front of the woodstove. Hopefully Jake would settle down by morning, because if Jessica left … well, he didn’t want to think about that.

He took his notebook from the coffee table, thumbed through to his most recent entry, and added Dirt to the list.
